Crowne Plaza Terrigal
Sometimes I get excited about being part of a couple’s wedding day even before they book me, as was the case with Jen & Ben. We met on a few occasions before actually even talking about having me photograph their day, and as the months have passed I’ve just grown to care more and more for them. Strangely I started writing this blog post two days before the wedding, that’s how excited I was to be part of their day. I wasn’t alone, all the vendors I spoke to had a bit of a spark in their eye when they spoke about Jen and Ben – we all knew it would be special.
Jen asked if I would take a few engagement photos for them two weeks before the wedding in an effort to ‘practice’ for the big day. These guys really didn’t need practice – they are soul mates and all they need to do is look at each other for a great moment, so I could not wait to see what their wedding day had in store. I was extremely emotional in the lead up! I just had this feeling it would be one of THOSE weddings, where I felt partly like the luckiest photographer in the world and partly like a guest privy to all the feels. It didn’t hurt that I got to work with so many of my faves, including Crowne Plaza Terrigal, When Love Sparks, Steff Matheson, DJ Magoo and more.
Jen got ready surrounded by her family – Mom, Dad, brother, sisters, everyone. There were nerves, excitement and tears, then it all became real for Jen not when she looked in the mirror but when she looked behind herself, a trail of lace and veil causing her to exclaim ‘it’s all real back there!’. Both families featured prominently in every part of the day with Ben’s brother as best man, Jen’s sister as maid of honour and all siblings joining the couple at the bridal table. Jen and Ben even planned some secret quiet time with their parents before the reception – they pretty much thought of everything and everyone.
I love their photos, and I hope to you they convey not only the beauty of this couple and the details of their day but also the emotion of the day as well…the excitement in the air, the way both families giggled and cried and shared, the way Jen frequently looked over at me with a giant grin on her face, the laughter when Jen went in for her big kiss at the church and Ben stopped her because he wasn’t quite certain it was time yet. The awesome live music by Nick Read which caused Jen to to dance in her seat and the brilliant surprise ending to Ben’s speech. Hopefully it conveys the tingly moment Jen & Ben stepped onto the dance floor and danced to the haunting Regina Spektor version of ‘Real Love’. I can only hope you feel a bit of this couple’s true life love story. Yes it’s real love, oh it’s real love; yes it’s real love.
